Frequently asked questions
Q. How long should our honeymoon be?
A. The best answer is “as long as the two of you have the time and budget to escape
together!”. For most couples, seven to ten nights will be ideal. You’ll need a day on the
front end of the trip to decompress from the wedding ceremony – and a day on the back end to prepare for reentry into your everyday lives. That leaves five to eight days to enjoy the trip! You should think about your chosen destination as well – four to six nights will work if you’ve picked a closer location (Mexico or the Caribbean), but you might need 10 to 14 nights for long-haul trips such as Europe, Asia, or the South Pacific (to justify the travel time and reduce fatigue).
Remember too that there is such a thing called “minimoons” – shorter two- or
three-night post-ceremony trips – because they can’t get extra time off work after the
wedding or they’re watching their budgets. Later, you can always plan a full-blown
weeklong “encore honeymoon” when you’re ready!
Q. How much should we budget for our honeymoon?
A. We find that most honeymoon couples spend $5,000 to $8,000 for a weeklong trip to
closer destinations (the Caribbean, Mexico, or domestic cities) or up to $15,000 for
“bucket list” options such as Fiji, Tahiti, Japan, Europe, or Africa. Here’s the best advice
we can give you: Set your budget first – find the amount you’re most comfortable
spending – and then pick your favorite destination that fits that amount. Don’t force a
destination to match your budget! (Our agency has so many connections and ideas to
help you plan the perfect destination-budget match.)
Q. When should we start planning our honeymoon?
A. When you’ve just gotten engaged, we know the focus is on the wedding plans first!
Generally, you should brainstorm your budget and a short list of possible destinations
six to nine months in advance at a minimum. But, if you’re thinking about long-haul
destinations (farther than Mexico, the Caribbean, and domestic options), you’re looking
at peak travel periods (e.g., the end of December on popular islands), or you want a
resort that’s always selling out, you should talk to us 10 to 12 months before departure.
That extra time will give you better flight options, more room category choices, and
possibly lower rates.
Q. Where should we consider going for our honeymoon?
A. Three key factors influence most honeymoon location decisions: your budget, your
schedule, and your desired experiences. We can help you evaluate different options
even in the priciest destinations, and we can stretch your budget to upgrade room
categories or add activities in many places. Then, knowing how many days you can get
away from work and family will tell us which close-in and long-haul destinations you
should look at. Finally, you can tell what you want to include in your honeymoon plans –
from adventure excursions and time on the beach to cultural experiences and great food
and drink – and we’ll map out your honeymoon plans to match those requests!
Q. Do all-inclusive resorts always work out best for honeymoons?
A. The short answer is “Not always.” While these resorts offer many advantages – you’ll
pay one price that includes almost everything you’d spend all day (from food and drink
to on-site activities), and many resorts really cater to the needs of honeymooners – you
may prefer the flexibility of a boutique hotel or urban city-center property where you can
enjoy local restaurants, shops, and entertainment. We can tap our connections with all
types of lodging suppliers to match you with the perfect location, both all-inclusives and
hotels of all types. (And, of course, don’t forget about cruises – there are so many
choices these days, from ocean-bound voyages to river sailings and adventure cruises!)
Q. What’s the best time of year to go on our honeymoon?
A. In many cases, of course, you may decide to depart the day after your ceremony –
so we can definitely schedule your trip and find the best values for you. But, if your
travel dates are flexible, we can research options based on weather conditions,
hurricane seasons, and peak-travel pricing to give you many options to choose from.
(For example, even top-priced bucket-list destinations may be more affordable if we can
send you during shoulder and low seasons!)
Q. Does it make sense to book activities and excursions in advance – or just plan things once we get there?
A. We recommend booking ahead of time anything that you’d consider a “must do”
experience – e.g., a whale watching cruise, a romantic dinner on the beach, a golf
round or tennis court time at a popular spot. Otherwise, you can keep things flexible and
decide things to do later based on the daily weather, your energy levels, and your mood.
(We can make those bookings for you or give you online links so you can do this on
your own.)
Do we have to go on our honeymoon right after the wedding?
Not at all! While many couples jet off the morning after their wedding for a weeklong honeymoon, we understand that work, family, or budget constraints might make that tricky. We can help you plan a "minimoon"—a short getaway right after the wedding—followed by a longer honeymoon later. Or, opt for a "delayedmoon" and save the big trip for a month or even a year later. Feeling social? Try a "buddymoon"—start with just the two of you, then invite close friends and family to join for a few days before rounding out the trip as a couple. Whatever your timeline, we’ll make it magical!
